Race Report – Mini Challenge 2018, Round 5, Oulton Park
Nathan was happy to be back in the car at Oulton Park after a break of nearly six weeks since his last outing at Silverstone. Although it was a single day with only two races as part of the annual Mini Festival
Qualifying was bright (very) and early, with only half a second separating the top 10, Nathan said “I was happy to get fourth, just over a tenth behind Rob (Smith) on pole, obviously I’d have liked to be on the front row, I knew I might be able to sneak through if I got a good start.
Race 1 was unusually uneventful apart from Ant Whorton-Eales getting a great start and moving from 6th to third on lap one, after that the top 4 maintained position to the flag. So Nathan finished fourth, just off the podium, despite his tyres losing grip earlier than expected.
Nathan started 5th on the grid for Race 2 but a brilliant start gave him two places up to 3rd on lap one. Nathan, Jordan Collard and Ant Whorton-Eales held the podium places until Collard retired on lap 8.
This left the win to be decided between Nathan and Ant Whorton-Eales. Nathan said “I just couldn’t keep up with Ant out of the corners, the car seemed to lack a bit of power and to make matters worse, David Robinson got past me on the drag to the line to grab second place”.
So Nathan ended up with a fourth and a third, good solid placings and points, not what he hoped for but that’s Motor Sport.
The Mini Challenge resumes in three weeks at Brands Hatch (11-12 August).
