Castle Combe Racing Club 2016 The Final Round…

With the last round being held at Castle Combe on Sat it was all to play for with some of the drivers, and points means prizes….

After such a hard season, it was good to see some of the faces still going for it under some tough conditions and having a slippery track to tackle.

The day began well with an emotional lunch time tribute to 80 year old Pete Diccox from Chippenham, having his final Formula Ford 1600 race after 26 years as a regular in the championship.

The circuit’s GT championship had already been won by Chris Vinall but there was still fascination at the front with the contrast of Barry Squibb’s mighty Evo winning from the tiny yet effective MG Midget clone of Chris Southcott.

Westbury on Trym’s Tim Woodman was close behind in his Caterham 7 to take 3rd, with Vinall winning B again and 4th overall, ahead of Steve Hall’s Audi TT silhouette.

Southcott entertained again in the last race of the day and the season. Having forgotten to qualify (sic), Southcott delighted the crowds with an amazing drive from the back of the grid in the Open sports v saloons race.

Eventual winner, Tetbury’s Ben Scrivens, in the much more sophisticated Ginetta G50, only just held Southcott off at the flag, with Vinall 3rd, Woodman 4th and Hove’s Ilsa Cox 5th.

Mike Good Racing

Well after blowing the top of the engine up in qualifying the double header round before and giving up 2nd in class, Mike knew he had to finish the last round to keep hold of 3rd in class championship.

After having his engine rebuilt he was good to go for the last round. All he had to do was finish the race in at least 3rd place to hold onto 3rd in class. This is what he did and qualified 2nd in class and we’ll in front of Arthur Marks who qualified 3rd in class.

Race started with him making an amazing start off the line getting past a few cars from higher class as he came into quarry corner for the first time. Wasn’t all plain sailing through out the race, where he quickly worked out he really hadn’t put enough fuel in the car and his fuel gauge by lap 10 was reading empty.

Mike had no choice but carry on, as if he had pulled off he would of lost his 3rd in class championship to Russell in his Corsa who only finished 2 points behind him in 4th. As he hit lap 13 his car was starting to cut out around each corner, indicating his car was incredibly low on fuel and each corner the car was getting worse and worse.

This didn’t stop him and he kept pushing. Well he made it to the chequer flap and he was over the moon. Not only did he finish that race 2nd in class he finished his season 3rd in class championship and 9th overall in the whole championship.. not bad for a little lupo..

Mike Good cool down lap didn’t go to plan as his car began misfiring. he just took this as having no fuel however as he entered the pits it was clear his car wasn’t going to run anymore and cut out.

Mike thought it was just down to running out of fuel.. how wrong he was, where he had ran the car low on fuel this had caused a mixture problem in the engine. Causing me to blow his head gasket.

Not the end Mike wanted but glad he got the points he needed. His plans for next year aren’t set in stone. However it could be an interesting year in what car he comes out in. Mikes lupo will be out driven by his dad and his 106 will be out driving by someone who has hired it.

Will have to wait and see what happens, Let’s hope when I’m back out next year I can get my points higher.. never no I could even walk away with the overall championship
